The Magpul Masada
The Masada Adaptive Combat Weapon System is the most advanced combat/assault rifle. Developed by Magpul Military Industries, the Masada is a modular design using state of the art manufacturing, materials and design to achieve a lightweight and reliable weapon system that can be adapted to meet different mission requirements. The Magapul Masada utilizes a modular design that incorporates multiple stock, barrel, handguard, FCG ( Fire Control Group) and caliber options.
At the heart of the Magpul system is the piston-driven gas system derived from the original Armalite AR18/180 design. Compared to the direct gas system used on other rifles, the Masada’s system reduces the amount heat and fouling that deposit in the action. Less fouling means the gun can go longer between maintenances and increases the service life of the Masada.
What makes the Masada system so appealing is the fact the simplicity of the modular system make modifications possible by the user in just a few minutes without the use of tools. Go from a short barrel Entry model to a long range precision rifle in just minutes.
Magpul’s modular construction grants the ability to change the magazine well to accept magazines from other rifles making the Masada extremely versatile. Initially offered in 556 NATO/223Rem the Masada accepts M16/AR15 magazines including the new P-MAG from Magpul Industries. Currently Magpul has designed a lower receiver that uses AK47magazines with others to follow.
The Masada’s unique cam on the quick change barrel system allows the user to swap out barrels in less than 2 minutes without tools. The Magapul Masada utilizes standard AR15/M16 barrels allowing the operator to choose the length that best suits their mission. Prototypes have been seen with 10.5, 12.5,14.5,16 and 18” barrels.
Magpul also offers several different stocks for the Masada combat rifle. The Entry model has a folding stock that also adjusts for LOP (length of pull) and cheek height while incorporating storage compartments for extra batteries. The second is a reinforced fixed stock with larger storage compartments and an optional steel toe for butt strikes is also available for the Masada. The third is a sniper stock with fine adjustments for cheek height and length of pull assuring a proper cheek weld and enhancing accuracy for long range engagements.
The Magpul Masada was designed from the ground up to be an ambidextrous combat weapon system. Controls fore the bolt release/hold-open and magazine release may be actuated from either right or left-handed shooters with the trigger finger. The safety is manipulated by the thumb as of the M16/A15 weapon systems from either side. The Masada employs a charging handle that can be move from one side to the other without any tools. The Masada’s non-reciprocating charging handle may be used as a forward assist if necessary. Location of the charging handle facilitates ease of operation while allowing the operator to keep the Masada indexed on target during reloading.
The Masada is compatible with many of the accessories from Magpul like inserts for the grip called “cores” that allow the user to store batteries, rifle parts or spare rounds right in the grip. Add on rails for the forend allow the use of lights, lasers and VFG’s ( Vertical Fore Grips). In addition Magpul also offers different styles of rail coves to protect both weapon and hands from damage and injury.
The Masada’s full length uninterrupted rail system is extruded from 7000 series aluminum and incorporate a Flip-Up front sight compatible with standard M16/AR15 sights along with all the rear BUIS ( Back-Up Iron Sights) on the market. The Masada has 37 1913 Picatinny slots allow the user to mount any optical system from tactical scopes to CQB (Close Quarter Battle) optics like the Aimpoint, Eotech., Acog, Reflex and C-More.
